Minox Camera Servicing

MS Hobbies has specialised in Minox cameras since 1970 and provides professional servicing for Minox 8×11 and Minox 35 cameras. This page describes servicing for customers in the United Kingdom. Customers outside the UK should refer to the International Minox Service page.

Northern Ireland Customers

Customers in Northern Ireland may use the standard UK servicing process. Cameras should be described as used camera sent for repair. No transfer of ownership is involved. Return postage is normally by Royal Mail Special Delivery.

Minox 8×11 Cameras

  • Mechanical overhaul and lubrication
  • Shutter and timing adjustment
  • Rangefinder and focus calibration
  • Light‑seal replacement where applicable
  • General inspection and functional testing

Parts availability varies by model and condition. Cameras are assessed individually before work is undertaken.

Minox 35 Cameras and Accessories

  • Mechanical servicing and adjustment
  • Electronic fault diagnosis where practical
  • Shutter and aperture checks
  • General inspection and testing
  • 35mm Flash unit service: mostly battery leakage

Long‑term reliability depends on condition and component availability. An assessment is carried out before any work proceeds.

Technician’s Report

A technician’s report is provided after assessment and before any work proceeds. Customers may download a blank copy of the report format used during servicing.

Assessment and Diagnosis

Minox cameras require full disassembly to diagnose faults accurately. In many cases the time needed to assess a camera is almost the same as the time required to complete the repair, as shutter, timing and metering components are only accessible once the camera is opened. Estimates are therefore provided after inspection, and assessment time forms part of the overall servicing process.

Turnaround Time

The average turnaround time for Minox 8×11 servicing is 3–5 weeks. Complex repairs or parts requirements may extend this to 8 weeks. These estimates allow for parts availability, customs processing and workshop scheduling.

Many repairs are completed sooner where faults are straightforward and parts are available.

Brand / SystemTypical TurnaroundNotes
Minox 8×11 (post‑war)3–5 weeks (up to 8)Precision mechanical
VEF Minox (Riga)6–10+ weeksEarly design, scarce parts
Minox 354–6 weeksElectronics + mechanics

Contax T2/T38–14 weeksAF modules, electronics
Rollei 354–8 weeksMechanical
Hasselblad V‑System6–10 weeksShutter + magazine service

EU Customers

EU shipments to the UK are subject to customs processing. Delays caused by German customs or UK Border Force are outside our control and may extend the total turnaround time.

Note on VEF Minox (Riga Production)

Early VEF Minox cameras differ significantly from later Wetzlar and Minox GmbH designs. Many internal components are unique to the Riga production period, and surviving parts are extremely limited. Diagnosis requires deeper disassembly and more time, and repairs may involve fabricating or adapting components. For these reasons, VEF servicing typically takes longer than post‑war Minox models.

Model‑specific notes 8x11

  • VEF Minox - filter wire failure, shutter detached, T and B speeds slow, dents, winder stiff, missing filter, war damage
  • Minox BL — common CdS cell drift and meter instability caused by battery leakage
  • Minox B / A/III‑series — uneven shutter speeds after long storage, B meter cell failure
  • Minox C — viewfinder frame misalignment after impact, battery leakage
  • Minox LX/TLX — film height tolerances and clutch spring issues, viewfinder fog
  • Minox TLX/CLX/LX — Meter Window missing, shutter unhooked
  • All -Dirty rear lens elements
  • C, BL,LX - ASA dial stiffness

Model‑specific notes 35

  • 35 EL / GL — ageing electronics and cracked solder joints
